Prediction

Real Madrid were able to keep their reserve players' engines ticking over with a midweek friendly against Fiorentina, with their squad looking in excellent shape.

A 3-0 victory against Depor was a comfortable start to the season, but the absence of Sergio Ramos could prove a little problematic against a motivated Valencia side.

Marcelino opened up his league career as Los Che boss with a good win over Las Palmas, where his side looked markedly more competitive and organised than last term.

Prediction: Real Madrid 3 - 2 Valencia
