Overview

The eleventh edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) is nearing the playoffs and has a handful of matches remaining in the league stage. However, apart from the Sunrisers Hyderabad, the remaining qualifiers are yet to be decided. Kolkata Knight Riders and the Rajasthan Royals are in the race for a berth in the top-four and will be pitted against each other tomorrow at the Eden Gardens.

KKR are likely to go unchanged for the all-important encounter. Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine remain as their openers. Robin Uthappa hasn’t been in the best of nicks and needs to fire. Dinesh Karthik, Kolkata’s leading run scorer, have to come to the party as well. Moreover, Andre Russell’s power-hitting abilities will be one to watch out for. Shubman Gill and Nitish Rana have a job to their bit.

The Royals are highly unlikely to make changes to their eleven. Jos Buttler will be keen to get his sixth half-century on the trot or even more, such has been his form. D’Arcy Short hasn’t had an overwhelming campaign thus far. Ajinkya Rahane looked good against MI but would be disappointed having not been able to see his team home. Sanju Samson and Krishnappa Gowtham are the in-form batsmen.

Probable 11

KKR- Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Dinesh Karthik, Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Andre Russell, Javon Searles, Piyush Chawla, Kuldeep Yadav, Prasidh Krishna/S Mavi.

Overview

The Delhi Daredevils (DD) have already been eliminated from the tournament and can’t progress to the playoffs even with victories in all their remaining matches. From a personal front, they only have pride to play for. However, the Daredevils have the opportunity to play spoilsport to the qualification chances of the other teams.

The Daredevils now can afford to make some changes in their squad. Glenn Maxwell might open with Prithvi Shaw. Shreyas Iyer and Rishabh Pant have been in prime touch and they are likely to remain in their respective slots. Naman Ojha, who hasn’t played thus far, might come into the eleven. Vijay Shankar is expected to bat next in the lineup.

In the bowling department, they could make a couple of changes as well. Sandeep Lamichhane, the leg-break bowler from Nepal, is in line to get his maiden opportunity in the cash-rich tournament. Junior Dala might also be drafted in place of Liam Plunkett. Trent Boult remains their strike bowler. Shahbaz Nadeem and Amit Mishra are the other bowlers.

There are a few possible changes in the batting lineup for the next game. Quinton de Kock, who didn’t play the last two matches, might return to the squad and open with Parthiv Patel. Virat Kohli isn’t well and hence, might be ruled out of the playing eleven. AB de Villiers will have to deliver for RCB to keep their hopes of qualification alive. Colin de Grandhomme and Mandeep Singh’s role will also be crucial.

Tim Southee and Umesh Yadav have been stupendous and need to display the same touch against DD as well. Yuzvendra Chahal has been a touch erratic this season and needs to find his rhythm, being one of the strike bowlers of the team. Mohammad Siraj was excellent in the last match. Moreover, Murugan Ashwin should also come into the eleven.

Probable 11

DD- Prithvi Shaw, Gautam Gambhir/Naman Ojha/Colin Munro, Glenn Maxwell/Gurkeerat Singh Mann/Manjot Kalra, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar, Sandeep Lamichhane, Shahbaz Nadeem/Jayant Yadav, Junior Dala, Harshal Patel, Trent Boult.

RCB-  Quinton de Kock/Brendon McCullum, Parthiv Patel, Pavan Deshpande/Sarfaraz Khan/Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Mandeep Singh, Colin de Grandhomme, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammed Siraj, Murugan Ashwin/Washington Sundar.

Players to watch

Overview

It will be a historic moment for Ireland Cricket when their 11 players will walk out on the field in the whites to make their debut in the longest format of the game. Sarfraz Ahmed led Pakistan are their opponents in the one-off Test who landed in the UK early to get acclimatised to the conditions. Even, The Village, in Dublin will make its international Test debut as the crowd is expected to fill in the Stadium more in excitement. However, the Irish boys would be eager to prove themselves by fighting it out as the visitors are obviously the favourites in this contest.

It is tough to predict the line-up of the hosts but Andy Balbirnie is expected to open the innings along with Porterfield. Paul Stirling bats in the middle-order for Middlesex in the County cricket and he might continue playing at the same position at the international level as well. The likes of Ed Joyce and Niall O’Brien lend stability to the team with their excellent technique. Kevin O’Brien is the all-rounder in the side who will bat at number 7.

The bowling attack is experienced enough with the presence of Tim Murtagh (210 first-class matches) and Boyd Rankin who has played for England previously at the highest level. Andy McBrine is the only spinner in the squad and will most likely get a look in as well.

Sarfraz Ahmed announced the playing XI of Pakistan ahead of the game and cleared that they will go in with the same team which defeated Northamptonshire in the practice game. Imam-ul-Haq is set to make a Test debut at the top of the order for Pakistan now and he will open the innings along with Azhar Ali. While Haris Sohail has been entrusted with the crucial number 3 spot, Asad Shafiq and Babar Azam will follow him. Pakistan are going in with 6 specialist batsmen and have picked Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf as all-rounders.

Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Abbas and Rahat Ali is the pace bowling attack as they will also be assisted by Faheem. Shadab Khan will be excited to play this game following his exploits in the practice match recently.

Probable 11

PAK- Azhar Ali, Imam-ul-Haq, Haris Sohail, Asad Shafiq, Babar Azam, Sarfaraz Ahmed, Shadab Khan, Faheem Ashraf, Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Abbas, Rahat Ali.

IRE- William Porterfield, Andy Balbirnie, Ed Joyce, Niall O’Brien, Paul Stirling, Gary Wilson, Kevin O’Brien, Tim Murtagh, Andy McBrine, Boyd Rankin, Stuart Thompson.

Overview

Delhi Daredevils (DD) will face the indomitable Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in what is supposed to be the last chance to keep their hopes alive in the tournament. Their fortunes are hanging by a thread and even if they manage to win all their remaining 4 matches, Delhi will end up with 14 points and will have to depend on other results to go their way. Though they would want to concentrate on this game first and chalk out the plans to get past the strong visiting outfit at the Ferozshah Kotla Stadium.

The hosts are unlikely to make a wholesale of changes to their side and back the group which has been doing well of late. Glenn Maxwell will get one more opportunity at the top after being run-out unluckily in the last game. Mohammed Shami might come back in place of Avesh Khan who has leaked runs in the last couple of matches. The onus will once again be on the Indian youngsters to take the team through as the likes of Plunkett and Christian are expected to chip in to make crucial contributions to the team’s cause.

Hyderabad would look to rest Bhuvneshwar Kumar in this game after the match-winning over he bowled against  RCB. Also, Manish Pandey has got enough opportunities and they just can’t continue with him now as the talented Deepak Hooda is sitting out for him. The rest of the line-up should be the same with Basil Thampi coming in again. The team management will be extremely pleased with the way Yusuf Pathan has been playing in this season. He has finished matches with authority and would love to see him doing the same.

Probable 11

SRH- Alex Hales, Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson, Deepak Hooda, Wriddhiman Saha, Shakib Al Hasan, Yusuf Pathan, Rashid Khan, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma

DD-  Prithvi Shaw, Colin Munro/Jason Roy/Gautam Gambhir/Maxwell, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Vijay Shankar, Daniel Christian, Rahul Tewatia/Jayant Yadav, Amit Mishra, Liam Plunkett, Mohammed Shami/Avesh Khan/Junior Dala, Trent Boult.

Overview

Mumbai Indians (MI) have dominated the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in their previous encounters as KKR have slumped to seven consecutive defeats against Rohit Sharma’s men. The dubious past record won’t keep the Knights in good stead ahead of their clash against MI at the Eden Gardens. Meanwhile, they are hanging midway in the league table and are in dire requisite of a victory.

The first and foremost strategy of the Knights will be to promote Sunil Narine in the opening position and Gill to be sent in the middle order. The rest of batting lineup doesn’t need to be altered. Chris Lynn and Narine combine well and the stand shouldn’t be tinkered with. Nitish Rana played well in his comeback game and needs to replicate the same in Kolkata.

The bowlers were exceptional in the last game and would want to maintain their form in order to put a lid on the Mumbai batsmen. Prasidh Krishna was expensive but churned out excellent line and lengths. The spinners in Kuldeep Yadav, Sunil Narine and Piyush Chawla’s role would be crucial as well. Andre Russell was impressive in the last match and needs to carry forward his form.

Evin Lewis and Suryakumar Yadav will remain the openers followed by Ishan Kishan who has gone into a slump following an impressive start to the event. Rohit Sharma has to contribute in some way or the other being the skipper of the team. Hardik and Krunal Pandya have shown that they can muster the runs in the hour of need. Ben Cutting’s abilities with the willow can’t be undermined either.

The bowling lineup has done decently for MI. The spinners in Mayank Markande, Krunal Pandya need to play a vital role in the slow wickets at the Eden Gardens. Hardik Pandya, who is the leading wicket-taker also needs to do his bit with the leather. Mustafizur Rahman might replace JP Duminy in the team and he will be partnered by Mitchell McClenaghan in the fast-bowling department.

Probable 11

MI- Evin Lewis, Suryakumar Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Krunal Pandya, Ben Cutting, Mayank Markande, Mitchell McClenaghan, Jasprit Bumrah, Mustafizur Rahman/JP Duminy/Kieron Pollard.

KKR-  Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Shubman Gill, Dinesh Karthik, Andre Russell, Piyush Chawla, Mitchell Johnson/Tom Curran, Prasidh Krishna/Shivam Mavi/Vinay Kumar, Kuldeep Yadav.

Players to watch

Overview

KL Rahul stood tall for Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) on Sunday against the Rajasthan Royals (RR) as they had botched up yet another chase. The two teams will once again lock horns for the second time in less than 48 hours and this time the game will be played at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. More than Punjab, the hosts are in desperate need of getting back their winning momentum as one more loss will potentially end all their hopes of qualifying for the playoffs.

Royals will drop D’Arcy Short who has been highly underperforming in his maiden stint in the IPL. Rahane should slot back in his preferred position again while Ish Sodhi should come into the team who was dropped for no reason. Even Ankit Sharma could be in contention as he is the left-arm spinner and could replace Shreyas Gopal in the line-up. Sanju Samson has to perform while batting at number 3 now who has surprisingly gone quiet after starting the season with a bang. The bowling attack fared well and there should be no changes in that aspect.

Manzoor Dar, the big man from Kashmir, might make his IPL debut in Jaipur by replacing Mayank Agarwal who has looked good in patches this season. The brittle middle-order of Punjab almost cost them the game against the same opposition the other day and will have to perform well now. The bowling attack is looking strong as ever with the skipper Ashwin leading from the front. Mujeeb Ur Rahman has been the standout performer for them this season and has played every game this season.

Probable 11

KXIP- KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Karun Nair, Manzoor Dar/Mayank, Manoj Tiwary, Marcus Stoinis, Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Andrew Tye, Ankit Rajpoot, Mujeeb Ur Rahman.

RR-  Jos Buttler, Ajinkya Rahane, Sanju Samson, Rahul Tripathi, Ben Stokes, Jofra Archer, K Gowtham, Ish Sodhi/Ben Laughlin, Ankit Sharma/Anureet Singh, Sheyas Gopal, Dhawal Kulkarni.

Overview

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) floundered in their erstwhile game against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and have virtually been eliminated. However, with cut-throat competition to bag the number four position, RCB still have a mathematical chance to edge the other teams on the basis of net run rate. However, in order to keep themselves alive, they need to win their remaining games.

The Sunrisers’ batting has been in decent enough form to remain unchanged. Alex Hales and Shikhar Dhawan are the openers followed by the enigmatic Williamson. Manish Pandey’s form has been a matter of concern as he hasn’t quite been able to justify his potential in the event. Yusuf Pathan played a blistering knock the other night, which will keep him in a positive frame of mind.

RCB are likely to go unchanged with their lineup. Parthiv Patel and Brendon McCullum will be their openers. They will be followed by the likes of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers who need to deliver in order for the visitors to have any chance of rolling over SRH in their own den. Colin de Grandhomme and Mandeep Singh will also have to play their part.

Probable 11

SRH- Alex Hales, Shikhar Dhawan, Kane Williamson, Manish Pandey, Yusuf Pathan, Shakib Al Hasan, Wriddhiman Saha, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Rashid Khan, Siddarth Kaul, Sandeep Sharma/Thampi.

RCB-  Parthiv Patel, Brendon McCullum/Manan Vohra, Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, Mandeep Singh/Chris Woakes/Moin Ali, Colin de Grandhomme, Murugan Ashwin, Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, Yuzvendra Chahal, Mohammad Siraj/Aniket choudhary.

Overview

Match 34 of the ongoing season fo the Indian Premier League (IPL) might witness the elimination of the defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI). They face the Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) who are fresh after enjoying a break of seven days and would be aiming to win this game to get on a winning spree again. Holkar Stadium in Indore will host this game as KXIP will play their remaining home games at this venue. However, the ground is known to produce flat tracks which sets up for yet another thriller on Friday.

KXIP would look to make a few changes their line-up as they look to get their momentum back. While the top four have fared decently, the problem has been with the finishers lower down the order. Aaron Finch could get dropped for Marcus Stoinis and Yuvraj Singh should continue to sit out with Manoj Tiwary set to get another opportunity. Also, they have been boosted by the availability of Axar Patel who is now available after recovering from an injury. The remaining line-up should remain the same as they will back Mayank Agarwal for few more games.

Evin Lewis is expected to get fit for the next game as he was missed in the top order against RCB. Ishan Kishan might also miss out after bagging yet another golden duck this season. He might need a small break which will work in his favour. Aditya Tare will come in his place and can take up the middle-order duties who also possess the finishing skills. Pollard’s misery continued in the last match and will make way for Lewis. There should not be any changes in the bowling attack which has done well so far.

Probable 11

KXIP- KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Mayank Agarwal/Manoj Tiwary, Karun Nair, Marcus Stoinis/David Miller, Manoj Tiwary/Axar Patel, R Ashwin, Mujeeb Zadran, Barinder Sran/Mohit Sharma Andrew Tye, Ankit Rajpoot.

MI-  Suryakumar Yadav, Evin Lewis, Rohit Sharma, JP Duminy, Aditya Tare, Krunal Pandya, Hardik Pandya, Ben Cutting/Mustafizur rahman, Jasprit Bumrah, Mitchell McClenaghan/Adam Milne, Mayank Markande.

Overview

The match between the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will be staged at the iconic Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Despite playing on their home turf, the Knights won’t start as the favourites, purely on the basis of current form. CSK have been clinical and have turned over oppositions even after being pushed on the back-foot.

Chris Lynn and Sunil Narine have performed decently against the RCB and hence it’s unlikely that KKR would make any changes there. The major concern would Nitish Rana’s injury and Ishank Jaggi might replace him, provided he doesn’t play. Andre Russell played a herculean knock against CSK and he would also look to deliver after his golden duck on his birthday.

The opening stand of Faf du Plessis churned out 100+ runs against the Delhi Daredevils and CSK are highly unlikely to tinker with the same. The experiment of sending Ambati Rayudu in the middle order has paid off and he might again be sent at number four. MS Dhoni has either promoted or demoted himself as per the needs of the team and it would be interesting to see his batting position.

Probable 11

CSK- Faf du Plessis, Shane Watson, Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, MS Dhoni, Dwayne Bravo/David Willey, Ravindra Jadeja, Karn Sharma/Bhajji, Harbhajan Singh/Shardul Thakur, KM Asif, Lungi Ngidi.

KKR-  Chris Lynn, Sunil Narine, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana/Ishank Jaggi/Rinku Singh, Dinesh Karthik, Shubman Gill, Andre Russell, Shivam Mavi/Prasidh Krishna, Piyush Chawla, Mitchell Johnson/Tom Curran, Kuldeep Yadav.

Overview

Delhi Daredevils (DD) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) are set to lock horns for the second time this season and are in a situation when both the teams need a victory. The hosts have to win this game to stay in contention for the playoffs. While the Royals are in a better position than their opponents, even they cannot afford any more slip-ups now. The second leg of the tournament has begun and this encounter is expected to be a close one. However, it will be interesting to see which team comes out on top or if Delhi will become the first team to be knocked out.

Despite losing the game against CSK, Delhi is expected to make no changes to their line-up. The bowlers had an off day and they might get another opportunity even as the batsmen are looking in great form. The team management would’ve been pleased to see the way Pant and Shankar batted which almost took them home in their previous encounter. The top order has to click for them now and suddenly things can change for them going forward. The captaincy has been decent so far from Iyer and the youngster is quickly learning.

There is a possibility that Shahbaz Nadeem might be included in place of Rahul Tewatia as there are a lot of right-handers in the opposition line-up.

Ajinkya Rahane was criticised a lot for not being able to unfurl big shots in the last game when his team needed the most. They will have to find a finisher or promote Gowtham who has won them the game with his batting pyrotechnics. Also, Jos Buttler’s consistent failures might pave the way for Klaasen to come in and don the gloves who will also bat at 5. The bowling has been rejuvenated ever since Jofra Archer has come in and there should be no changes in that department for this game.

Probable 11

DD- Prithvi Shaw, Colin Munro, Shreyas Iyer, Rishabh Pant, Glenn Maxwell, Vijay Shankar, Liam Plunkett/Junior Dala, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan, Shahbaz Nadeem/Rahul Tewaia/Jayant Yadav, Trent Boult.

RR-  Ajinkya Rahane, Rahul Tripathi/Prashant Chopra, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Heinrich Klaasen/D'Arcy Short, Krishnappa Gowtham, Mahipal Lomror, Jofra Archer, Dhawal Kulkarni/Anureet Singh, Isha Sodhi, Jaydev Unadkat.
