Overview

Afghanistan will play a three-match ODI series against Ireland with the first match beginning on  Tuesday at Sharjah. Afghanistan are coming off the title triumph in 2015-17 ICC Intercontinental Cup post their win over UAE. Ireland finished second in the tournament. This series will also be a good preparation ground for both the teams ahead of 2018 World Cup qualifiers which will be held in March 2018. Cricwizz takes a look at the strengths and weaknesses of the two teams ahead of the clash between Afghanistan and Ireland in First ODI at Sharjah on Tuesday.

The two star players from Afghanistan are making waves in the cricketing world across all domestic T20 tournaments. Nabi is the third best all-rounder in the 50-overs format, while Rashid Khan is ninth in the list of top 10 bowlers. Hence, these two players’ performance will be crucial to their team’s chances in the series against Ireland.

Ireland have the reputation of being giant killers. They have beaten top, quality teams in Pakistan and England before. Hence, they would look to get past a fast-emerging team in Afghanistan. They also had few players going on to play for England such as Eoin Morgan. Ireland are ranked 12th, two spots below Afghanistan. It would be a good opportunity for Ireland to prepare for the World Cup Qualifier.
