Overview
Sri Lanka threatened India in the first Test match after taking a big lead but the No.1 Test side made a strong comeback to put the Lankans on the edge. A pace-friendly surface gave the visiting team the edge in the first Test of the series, which was expected to be a one-sided affair. However, with India opting for similar surfaces ahead of the South Africa series, the remaining Test matches will also sport similar wickets.
Vijay for Dhawan and Ishant Sharma for Bhuvneshwar Kumar are the likely forced changes for the home side. It could be interesting to see if the team management gets tempted to play an extra batsman in place of a spinner to cover for the handy lower-order contributions of Bhuvneshwar, which they won't have in the game. If the Nagpur wicket turns out to be as dry as it usually is, they might not need that change.
Sri Lanka's decision to field Dasun Shanaka as the all-round option provided mixed results. The medium-pacer fared well as a bowler, picking five wickets across the two innings, but couldn't offer much with the bat. But Chandimal has been a strong advocate of a combination that includes six batsmen, four bowlers and an all-rounder, which should keep Shanaka in the side.
On a favourable surface, fast bowler Lahiru Gamage put in an underwhelming performance. If Sri Lanka do seek a replacement, left-arm pacer Vishwa Fernando could be an option. Chinaman bowler Lakshan Sandakan could also be in the running for a spot in the final XI, if they believe spin could take precedence, as it always does, in Nagpur.
